WHAT IS SOIL MECHANICS, GEOTECHNICS, AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING?
Geotechnics is based on the laws of soil mechanics (compaction, shear resistance, filtration) and the laws that determine the nature of soil deformability (under moistening, dynamic, temperature and other influences, stress), as well as on the theory and practice of foundation construction and underground construction, taking into account regional features of engineering geology and dangerous geological processes (landslides, karst, flooding, seismic impacts).
Geotechnics as a complex field was formed after the accumulation of knowledge and experience in the field of soil mechanics, foundations and foundations, including achievements in related construction disciplines. Geotechnical engineering was given a strong boost by unique technical solutions created in the second half of the XX century: a wall in the ground, anchors in the ground, jet technology and geotextiles, which make it possible to implement the most complex geotechnical projects that were previously considered impossible.
In 1936, on the initiative of Karl Terzaga, the International Society of Geotechnical Engineers ISSMGE was established. In Russia, since 1957, the National Association of the USSR for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Construction has been successfully operating within the framework of this society, the legal successor of which is the Russian Society for Soil Mechanics, Geotechnics and Foundation Construction (ROMGGiF).
